Do you know what happens to a martini glass when it sits neglected in the china cabinet? It dies of a broken heart.

The Gray One tries to tell me that it was a vampire martini glass and the toothpick I used to hold my olives last time served as the wooden stake that slayed it. I think the Gray One watches too much Buffy.
My attempts at pursuing knowledge about Flash ActionScript yesterday didn't go very far. I couldn't get a toehold and the syntax and layers are totally confusing right now, so I wandered down to the Parlor, wondering what I was going to do. I knit another row on DaCapo. The rows are over 400 stitches now, so it takes a while.

Then I decided to go look around the Yarnitorium to see if anything called my name. I opened a few drawers, shuffled around to the backs of shelves, glanced at the pile of stuff on the table, heaved a sigh, and left. Checked my email, got some more water, ignored the walls.
Back downstairs, knit another row on DaCapo. Decided to take another gander at the Yarnitorium, and finally "discovered" these-- inside a bag, inside a drawer, from a year or so ago.

Now if these little needlepoint canvases can't cheer someone up, nothing can. So I decided to work on them, especially since they are destined for the bathroom I just painted lavender.
I gathered all my equipment-- needle, "parking lot" magnet, laying tool, scissors. Then I thought how cold my toes were. And remembered-- I bought some Barefoot Mountain Colors sock yarn the other day. I was going to make toe-up socks for the first time.
So I wound up a ball of the yarn, found two set of two sizes of needles (thinking to avoid second sock syndrome and running out of yarn by knitting both socks approximately simultaneously), found my copy of Simple Socks Plain & Fancy, and made:
a toe
I was so pleased with myself for a couple of seconds.
Then I looked at the "waste yarn" I had used for the temporary caston. It was from a ball of yarn I had bought to make One Of Susanna's Two-Thirds Sachet. I took her class at Gig Harbor, she was the most wonderfully organized person there, and a marvelous teacher. I didn't do justice to the sachet I started in class because the beads perfectly matched the yarn, and I wanted something a little bit more pronounced.
So, abandoning my toe, I sought out some yarn and beads to make a sachet. The chosen fiber was silk/wool, the same that I tried unsuccessfully to unload in my destashing days. I cast on and knit some rows of the sachet.

My toes were still cold, reminding me of my sockless toe, which I decided needed to grow. (A sane person might have just gone upstairs and put some socks on.) I spent the rest of the day and evening dividing my energies between DaCapo and DaSocko. I still have 7 ridges to go before the back of DaCapo is finished, but at least I made it through the day.

The comments and suggestions yesterday were encouraging and heartwarming. Even though I could never make myself go out for a walk, I was warmed by your good wishes and understanding. Thank you.
That's my girl :-)
My James tells everyone that it is very de rigeur with serious knitters to have multiple WIPs hanging around the house.
Do you have any spare needles left? (I just did a mental count of all the WIPs you have talked about in the last 6 months or so - close to 20 now, me thinks) I too have few spare needles, so you're in good company. (That's if you want to be lumped with a crazy like me)
Posted by: peter on March 4, 2004 02:56 PMYou don't need to use waste yarn to cast on a sock toe. In fact, I can't conceive of why you would (unless you were doing it the new way I came up with last week).
If you don't want to use the cast-on with depth from PGR's book, just use a closed tube cast on (from Beverly Royce's book. Totally different sorts of toes. I prefer a toe with depth, but I used the closed tube cast on for years.
I was blindly following PGR's toe-up instructions and since I really had no clue what I was doing, I just did it her way. I suppose you could also do a figure-8 cast-on instead, like some of the top-down mittens?
Peter, believe it or not, I still have a bagillion needles free, but mostly larger ones than I tend to use. I probably have a small fortune invested in needles due to my multiple WIP reality. And I need more :-)
Posted by: Sheila on March 4, 2004 04:58 PMI use the figure 8 cast on for toes. When I knit them toe-up, which is not often. Knitting socks isn't exactly exciting these days, I think that I use the threat of running out of yarn to introduce an exciting element of risk. Maybe that's what you need these days Sheila, Danger knitting. Hang tough lady, summer sun is coming.
Is your Bearfoot in Lupine? 'Cause it looks exactly like the ball I have sitting wound up next to the computer...
You seem to be flitting endlessly from project to project, while I seem to be doomed to endlessly knit and rip and re-knit the very same one....I've tried knitting two different socks out of this ball, didn't like either one, and ripped them both. Maybe you're right and plain socks are the way to go.
Posted by: Karen on March 5, 2004 02:31 PMoh you made me laugh. i know the feeling well that you had. though i get starteritis really bad. I woke up in the middle of the night trying to justify just how i could start another project (it is springish) ... but i'm holding myself back (or at least trying to)
those cross stitch will be beautiful!

Posted by: Fast Wares on September 5, 2004 02:50 AMI rarely speak in absolutes when discussing texas holdem, but it is absolutely worth the study. Texas holdem is a people game played with cards, not a card game played by people, at least once you get out of the penny-ante level.
