Forget-Me-Not

I sit here in the Compurgatory of Happy Holler, observed--no, arrested by three of my pets, who insist that I complete my blog entry tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow morning. Who am I to argue with talons and incisors that are sharper than a Leisure Suit Larry circa 1976?

It was a good day. The sun shone, the flowers bloomed, the Male Glitchbane-with-the-gray-mane mowed. I put one of my trusty spinning wheels out on the deck with a basket of wool and waited to see what would happen.

Sherlock and Ginger could not believe it when Ermadine told them that they had to spin up the whole basket or there would be no kibble for them. I slapped her silly, soothed their ruffled fur and sat down to spin myself.

On Friday I had spun up a bobbin of this merino, I believe it is, a colorway called 'red wine' (those who know me know it is hard for me to resist a good red wine). That bobbin is on the bottom of this lazy Kate, against a background of forget-me-nots that grow wild in our back forest.

While spinning, I listened to the cadence of PD James on CD. What a treasure.

I did knit, but not much, throughout the weekend, mostly on Birch. Other than spinning, my fiber proclivities directed me towards weaving. I took a break on Saturday and went to the Weaving Works. My heart was warmed-- they have finally restocked and the shelves were overflowing with fibery goodness. I selected five cones of cotton, rayon, tencel and mercerized cotton with which to weave a table runner. When I got home I went about researching weaving design software. In a future blog entry I will show you what I found overall, but I ended up downloading an older program called DB-Weave, perfectly adequate for my needs. This is what I did first. But I'm still working on ideas, and I think I may have something better.

Tomorrow I will also describe in detail what it means to "use tabby". Why? Because I spent way too much blankety-blank-blank-blank time researching it on the web to no avail. Oh, sure, the question is to be found. But a straightforward and descriptive answer? Nyet. I think would-be weavers deserve more than that.

I hear someone snoring. I think it's a hint I should be in bed. Ta-ta, sleep tight and don't let the Malpervides' bite.

i always thought to "use tabby" means just plain weave, right?

To me, "use tabby" means to cuddle a cat when I'm depressed... ;->
I have been spindling the bluefaced leicester in 'red wine' that you sampled for me last year. It spins up so pretty. That's my dose of color, as I have jet black merino on the wheel right now.

Vanessa, yes and no. Or yes and yes but.... Plain weave is called tabby, but plain weave is also used as a structural support for fancier weaves like overshots. It is exactly how the plain weave is put into the fancy weave that is never explained on the web, and is not shown on drawdowns (for the unweaverly, drawdowns are the graphs that show you the threading and treadling for a particular type of weave). The drawdowns simply say "use tabby" when obviously the weave is not plain, and I have scratched my head over that one for weeks.

I love your lazy kate, much more practical than the one I am using that drives me absolutley nuts. Yesterday was a wonderful day to drag the wheel outside and spin! Glad you had the chance to enjoy the weather.

Metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.
