The Next Soiree...
Attention! Attention! The next Soiree in Madame's Parlor will be Sunday, June 13th! Any knitter, spinner or weaver in the area is welcome to attend, Happy Holler will be happy to receive you and promises not to holler too much. If you need directions, email me (sheila at twoswansyarns.com).
This is one of those Soirees With A Purpose, a sad purpose. Janine will be leaving us (sob) on June 21st, and this is our chance to bid her adieu (sob). Wear your mourning attire, bring flowers, whatever you want to mourn her passing. I'm crying just thinking about it. How dare she become such an important figure in my life and then move to Berkeley? If she thinks I won't come down there and seek her out, she's wrong, buddy.
So on June 13th, come around noon and plan to stay until you have to leave. Since this is likely to be a large crowd, it might be nice to have a potluck, don't you think?
The Feng Shue Wedding Afghan Plan is proceeding nicely. In the center of this golden rectangle is a rectangle representing wood: "planks" that are 7-cable flat braids (also represent wooden baskets, which my sister loves) seperated by twisted 2-stitch cables.
On one end of the wood is "metal", a border on the wood, which will be represented by little horseshoe cables-- traditionally horseshoes mean good luck, and they're made of iron.
On the other end of the wood is "stone", another border. Stone will be represented by the Bavarian brick pattern.
Next to both stone and metal will be "fire". I finally found something that works nicely, the "Fireflower" pattern from BW#2 which, when worked with my four colors, looks pretty neat. I have altered it a bit because the flowers got a bit messy with the pattern as written.
On both long sides of these four elements is "earth". For this I will use the plowed field look of the Bavarian Check.
Finally, bordering the entire thing will be some version of Old Shale or Feather and Fan, representing the waves of "water".
Although I'll be using the aforementioned colors of Mountain Goat for this afghan, I can see using colors that correlate with the elements in other versions.
Here is a non-artist's visualization of the concept of the Feng Shue Afghan:
To create it, I will make the center first, using a provisional caston. Then, in the style of Shetland stoles, I will work out from the center on each side. I'll then pickup stitches along the long sides for the "earth" strips, and finally attach the border.

I had a wild impulse to drive up for the soiree. What fun that would be...but my family has a weekend outing in Central Oregon planned for that date. Between the SAT's for my son on the previous weekend, and music camp for both kids on the remaining two weekends, the 12th and 13th was the only available time. Alas. I will think of you, and be assured, I will be knitting!
