All I wanted to do was to be prepared for the next Quilting Broads meeting-- a simple goal. I decided to mark hexagons on fabric that I could cut out at the quilt-together, and maybe excise some hexagons from card stock, thus enabling myself to baste there, too.
But before I knew it, all my preparations were gone, used up while watching Buffy from the beginning (due to a total lack of anything interesting on tv). What could I do, but more? Now (three days later) I have lots of prepared hexagons in my box, hundreds of little fabric shapes ready to be basted onto quantities of paper shapes, a glint in my eye and concentration on my brow.
So you see, what began as an innocent attempt to look busy at Pat's house has ended in a deep relationship with quilting. I have developed at least a temporary passion for the art, and I believe it is reciprocated. I warn it that this is a temporary thing, it is my "rebound" art of the moment, as I am not in love with knitting at the present. It is content with that.
I love the technique of applique, so I decided to prepare a block that I can applique in public. This is an Ohio Rose, pieces prepared with freezer paper and all basted. Notice how useful my little Black Sheep acquisition will be?

Meanwhile, FlyLady continues to hurl reminders at me, and I must learn to shield my eyes from my email inbox before I have my first cup of coffee. The attack of commands is enough to say enough! but really, even if I follow half of her orders I am much more satisfied with my surroundings. Anybody want about three years worth of Gourmet magazines? 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1998-- yours if you pick them up! See? Getting rid of clutter... everyone knows I don't adore cooking.
Most (American) people will be celebrating the 4th today, but for me it is the worst holiday of all. Even though fireworks are illegal in Bellevue, they are set off anyway, all the time. Poor Grazzi goes insane, barking her despondent, anxious bark exactly one second after the noise hits our ears. I spend much of my time calming her and assuring her that there is nothing she can do to protect us from it. The Gray is working, trying to be able to leave on vacation in two weeks without being so behind when he returns. Quilting will be my friend today.
Life is good.
Posted by Sheila at July 4, 2005 08:46 AM Posted to Flower Garden | Grazzi | Ohio Rose | Quilting | Quilting Broads | TrackBackI've been doing the clutter clearing too.. went through my two folders of sewing and knitting patterns I've been saving since I was 15. Threw out heaps, had a good laugh doing it. All the real patterns I'm sending to the charity shop. Someone might be able to use them.
So far today, my sink got shined.
Posted by: noonie on July 5, 2005 05:46 AMI'm with you on the pets and fireworks thing. I spent most of last evening reassuring Patrick that everything was okay and that nothing was going to happen. He didn't exactly believe me. I'm glad I was home with him though. I think it helped that I was calmly knitting as usual.
Posted by: Larry on July 5, 2005 06:26 AMLovely block!
Posted by: drjudy on July 5, 2005 10:38 AMI agree with drjudy (great name!)--that's a lovely block. I am having a torrid love affair with applique at the moment, and my poor knitting is just sitting by my side, lonely.
I looked for you at Black Sheep, but it sounds like our schedules were quite different. I love that sewing stand!
Posted by: Judy H. on July 5, 2005 10:53 AMI'm fortunate that my dog, Blossom, is quite laid back and fire works don't faze her. My cat, on the other hand, freaks out at a car driving by. She insists on being an indoor/outdoor cat though.
Ilove your quilt blocks. I have dabbled in quilting but, alas, applique and I did not get along.
Posted by: Trish on July 6, 2005 12:52 PMI love the Flylady -- thanks for the link! As a result, a steady stream of Freecycle people came to my house over the last day or two and relieved me of a ton of junk, er, treasures. Wonderful! Less cluttered and I get to feel virtous for not pitching stuff in the landfill. Woo!
