I would like to begin recounting my Ireland adventure with my most favorite moment.

We had stopped at a beach near Kells on our way to tour the Ring of Kerry. A largely toothless Irish man had parked his van at this sightseers spot and had with him two lambs, one a Black Welsh and one this rarest of rare breeds, the Beehive, so named because the face looks like a bunch of swarming bees.
The little darling came right over to me and snuggled up into the warmth of my mohair/silk shawl, pressing his sweet little head into my hand as I pet him. I was loathe to part with him but will remember him forever.

Posted by: Nadia on July 25, 2005 10:46 AMOh, that picture made my day! What a cutie!
Posted by: Mary on July 25, 2005 12:07 PMwelcome back! you were missed. Hope you had a spectacular time...and um, i thought that was a duck you were holding...with a sort of fuzzy beak.
Posted by: tanya on July 25, 2005 01:09 PMAwwwwwwwwwww.
Posted by: Hope on July 25, 2005 01:19 PMOh, I just doubt that you're going to leave it at that... I can just see the post in, say, 6 months: "We've fenced the back yard and are importing 3 Beehive breeding stock..."
Posted by: Janine on July 25, 2005 01:39 PMThat thing is *adorable*! Cute-tastic rating on this picture: 10+ Who knew that a lamb would *cuddle*?!
Posted by: Lolly on July 25, 2005 01:49 PMAnd you gave it back?! I would have been running away, stuffing that cutie in my luggage as I went, trying to come up with a plan to feed him through out the rest of the trip so I could get him home! Now I have to go google Beehive Sheep.
Posted by: Jan on July 25, 2005 02:25 PMPlease more pictures and your trip. I like reading.
Posted by: Karen Feegle on July 26, 2005 07:02 AMWhat a heartrending picture! So very, very, very sweet. Yes, I think there may be some Beehive fleece in your future, if not an actual flock of sheep. ;-)
Posted by: Beth S. on July 26, 2005 07:30 AMOh, Sheila, that is absotively marvelous. Beautiful picture, beautiful lamb, beautiful shawl. You've got to print that one out big. You look so happy!
Posted by: terri on July 26, 2005 04:50 PMI'm so envious of your adventures in Ireland; I have always wanted to travel there.
On a side note: You and I have the same glasses. Interesting, isn't it, the little things that we find we have in common with others? Oh, and I knit too. :)
What a beautiful little lamb.
Posted by: Laura on July 26, 2005 08:30 PMI forwarded this wonderful photo to some sheep expert friends of mine, it sounds like this darling "beehive" could be a Scottish Blackface lamb. I've had no luck in finding a picture of a SB lamb or searching beehive sheep. Oh well...Drink a Guinness for me?
Posted by: Annie on July 28, 2005 08:45 AMAnnie, thank you for doing that! I had begun to wonder, too, since I couldn't find any reference to a "beehive" breed, whether the beehive could refer to the coloring of a lamb or sheep, like the Shetland sheep have the mogit, eesit, sholmit, etc. It would make sense that this would be a Scottish Blackface, since there are millions of them in Ireland! Unfortunately it makes me sad, too, because it means this little one is destined for the cookpot.
