I am seeking official permission to wipe yesterday off the annals of history. First, the cause of the Rant, which we covered yesterday. Next, the blog software. It was inexplicably biased against allowing readers of Ryan's blog to comment, but didn't seem to mind if anybody commented on mine. We spent half a day trying to figure that one out when it finally figured itself out and started working again.
Then, as I was winding the endless pink cashmere (yes, still... I'm up to ball seven now) the yarn snapped and I lost the end. So somewhere in amongst all those very pink stuck-together fibers there is a loose end and I can't find it, though I have looked and looked. Has anyone got a great tip for finding one?

Earlier, I thought I'd start Margaret Tudor (from Tudor Roses)-- you know, the one with the 56 buttons? But after only 21 rows of 33 stitches on the first panel I realized there was an error in the chart and couldn't figure out what I should be doing rather than what the chart said. Fooey on that. (Lolly helped me figure it out later. She deserves a prize).
So I did a little stash organizing. My brilliant idea was to bring upstairs all the lace, fingering and double knitting and possibly worsted weight yarn and take downstairs all the kits, WIMPs, Aran and chunky yarn. Upstairs, downstairs, over and over until I was all sweaty and realized the extent of my mission. It would not be done in an hour. And I had to concede that any yarn that was in balls or doughnuts would have to stay downstairs, because it needs to be in drawers or it will jump off the shelves and follow any old knitter that walks by. This is part of the Upstairs Yarn Salon.

As I did the Stash Shuffle, I found my Maidenhair WIMP and decided to forgo the Margaret Tudor and work on it. At one time I had a marvelous handwritten guide to how all the charts worked, but it is somewhere in outer space, I'm sure, destined for a time capsule for largely unknown reasons.

Not having a brain left to do programming tasks, I sat down before the Great Excel and charted out the Maidenhair. A couple of hours later the task was done-- but I was totally out of the mood to knit on it.
So I made myself a cold martini and had just about enough wherewithal left to drag out some berry colored wool/cotton and start Kinsale from Fisherman Sweaters (Alice Starmore) because it's simple and pretty and well, why not?

Yes, there should be a gaping hole in the history books where yesterday was. Please?
Regarding your lost end, would the spinning trick of using a toothbrush to find a lost end on a bobbin work?
Posted by: Annie on September 7, 2005 10:45 AMThat's a thought... I'll try it out when I get back from errands. It may take a bigger brush... maybe a bottle brush. I'll see. Thanks!
Posted by: Sheila on September 7, 2005 12:16 PMPerhaps using the sticky side of a piece of Scotch tape will help with your lost end. Never tried it when winding yarn, but it worked when I lost the end in a bobbin while spinning.
Good Luck!
Martinis all around-- we are saved!! Vicki's suggestion (which also came through another friend in the mail about the same time) worked like a charm! I just happened to have packed a couple of boxes to ship today and had a roll of Priority Mail tape right in front of me, so I gave that a try before trying the brush. It only took about four presses of the tape onto the skein to bring up that bad, bad end. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Posted by: Sheila on September 7, 2005 03:02 PMYou have my permission, my dear woman...
I need to know the fix for Margaret Tudor. I have the yarn. I have the buttons! I have not started it yet...
Didn't mean to make you cry yesterday! {:-(
Posted by: Katie on September 7, 2005 03:33 PMThe Maidenhair is fabulous! How are you charting the pattern on Excel? Using a symbol chart?
Posted by: Dianna on September 7, 2005 03:45 PMI really, REALLY heart Kinsale. I've bought the yarn, but I have Xmas knitting to do - if I don't get started now, it will never get done.
So glad you found the end of the cashmere! I was going to suggest tape, too...
Posted by: sravana on September 7, 2005 08:42 PMThere's a chart error? In one of Her patterns? Careful, you might get sued for saying such a thing!
I had forgotten your Maidenhair WIP. What's that yarn you're using? It's purty.
And I want to knit Kinsale in a nice magenta color one of these years. Or maybe tangerine. Something bright and rich.
Posted by: Beth S. on September 8, 2005 09:22 AMAh yes, the lovely displayed stash...oh the peace and vulnerability all at the same time. The Husband built beautiful shelves for me in the living room, oh so many years ago, so that I could admire all of my handspun and look at my palette from the Dent In The Couch...then came the M-Word. Ummm, my precious stash has not been exposed in years now. Sheilaaaaaaaaaaaa...may you have a bug zapper at every entrance to your lovely abode.
