Cuzzin Tom reports that, despite his 14 years of monkhood, since he was brought up in a family of goils and since, as he likes to say, “you can take the boy out of New Jersey but...,” he has greatly enjoyed being the center of attention of a bunch of fawning ladies, as is further evidenced by this picture where yet another female, although of the avian variety, is trying to undress him.

Cuzzin Tom reports that da boid's name is Howie, even though she be a girl. He also reports that the other bird in the picture is Hakan, Howie’s boyfriend. Personally, I don’t think Cuzzin Tom should be so surprised that Howie is trying to undress him. Look at the color of Hakan’s feathers. Look at the color of Cuzzin Tom’s robe/top/shirt. Coincidence? I think not. In fact, I believe Cuzzin Tom is deliberately toying with Howie's affections.
Howie and Hakan are residents of a place run by Cuzzin’s temple called the Garuda Aviary which is, in its own words, “dedicated to providing lifelong sanctuary for abused and neglected companion birds.” The picture of the forever featherless—but now happy and well-cared for—poster-bird on their home page will tell you everything you need to know. Excuse me, I need to go get a Kleenex. That bird kills me every time. Every frickin’ time.
Knitting Knews
Thanks to all of the helpful information I got from my Dear Readers, especially the one sentence from CarolineF that made the clouds part and heavenly music play, I was able to finish the front of the striped sweater, neck decreases and all. It didn’t work out perfectly, 50% of which was the pattern’s fault, and 50% of which was mine (you would think that by age 44 I would know how to count to 2) but it’s good enough for government work, as they say. And, thanks to The Mysterious K and her bionic camera, we finally have a photo that shows the actual colors of the sweater. (I wonder how much longer I'm going to get away with conveniently "forgetting" my camera when I visit her on the weekends...)
After this photo was taken, I finished one sleeve and am well into the cuff of the other, so, for this project at least, I can fer sher see the light at the end of the tunnel. Here’s my next question: Since the sweater is striped, when I seam the sweater together, what color should I use? I do a pretty mean mattress stitch so not much of the seaming will show but I’m still interested in opinions. I’m thinking the purple, since the yellow and the red would be brighter and would stand out more. You?
(By the way, a big "hello" and "welcome back" to Dear Reader Debra! We were just talking about you this weekend and saying how much we missed ya'!)
I can't help but notice that the colors of that sweater are a lot like Cuzzin Tom and his birds. Coincidence? Or was you all artistic-like when you started out your post today? Holy Moly, there is just a new conundrum in every knittin' DAY, ain't there??? Yes, indeed, (I'm going to be no help on this one) but what color DOES one choose to seam up a striped sweater, eXpecially one that's so durned BRIGHT AND COLORFUL? I'll be anxiously awaiting to hear what your readers (the ones who know stuff more than I) have to say!
Posted by: Norma on August 23, 2004 11:20 AMoh, that poor nearly nude bird- perhaps a wee knitted chemise (cotton of course- after all, wool might annoy delicate birdie-skin)-
the colors in the striped sweater are such happy colors! i do think the purple for stitching would probably work out for the best, but consider my advice with trepidation, as i always have to seam and reseam when putting striped garments together-
stay happy-
Posted by: barb in texas on August 23, 2004 11:21 AMwell here is my 2 cents: I always seam with the lightest color. I figure it will show up the least. But what the h-e-double hockey sticks do I know??
Posted by: anj on August 23, 2004 11:51 AMWell, reach for the hankies again. Juliette, our beloved, permanently-plucked Blue-and-gold Macaw, died this year. Her longtime companion, Harry, is a very sad guy. We love him up as much as he'll let us, but it's never enough.
In Juliette's case, the plucking behavior was the result of one of the cruelest things you can do to a bird--boring them. Their natural jungle environment is constantly stimulating, so in captivity they really need multiple perches, lots of chew toys, and frequent interactive attention. Juliette and Harry were kept for 20 years as decorative objects, with nothing to do. Deep neuroses were the result.
Sorry I'm not witty today. No jokes come to mind where animal abuse is concerned.
But anyway, Howie and Hakan are happy, mischievous lovelies and I'm glad you get to see them, even if I spoil the photo.
Posted by: Cuzzin Tom on August 23, 2004 12:04 PMNot to fret, Cuzz; you are also a mischievous lovely. As for Juliette, big, deep sigh, and, yes, I need more Kleenex.
So now I have one vote for seaming with darker color and one vote for seaming with the lighter color. You guys KNOW this isn't helpful, don't you? ;-)
Posted by: Ryan on August 23, 2004 01:01 PMPurple.
Though, if one really were feeling picky/adventurous one could seam each color with separ...
Or perhaps not.
Posted by: Kit on August 23, 2004 01:03 PMI vote purple. How do I know this? you ask. I once made a sweater in medium blue, with color patterns in white and burgundy. I seamed in white because I was short on blue. What an idiot. The white sticks out like snow in July. Luckily, it's for Emily and she won't fit it anymore by the time she's old enough to notice.
Now, this might sound contrary to what my mother always told me: Light colors work in darker. I believe however that this applies only when needing to sew something medium blue with two different shades of blue thread available. Then, I would choose the lighter one.
Posted by: CarorlineF on August 23, 2004 01:08 PMI'm with Kit. Purple. Mary
Posted by: Mary on August 23, 2004 01:38 PMPhew! My Dear Readers are once again showing the strong-minded, united front they are known for. I'm thinkin' I'm leanin' toward purple now...
Posted by: Ryan on August 23, 2004 01:43 PMEven though I don't knit, I do work with color and agree with the consensus--purple! ;-)
TMK
Posted by: The Mysterious K on August 23, 2004 01:48 PMOh...my...Gawd. A comment *about knitting* from The Mysterious K. Anyone know if it's a full moon?
Posted by: rymorriss on August 23, 2004 01:50 PMHey!
Posted by: The Mysterious K on August 23, 2004 01:56 PMAt the risk of being the object of rotten tomato throwing... may I suggest a neutralish beige or gray? Purple or red may show on the yellow, yellow may show on the purple and red. Of course, you could just use sewing thread and regular whipstitch and then you have the option of the clear non-color thread. It would have the added advantage of being verrry strong.
And one more suggestion-- use the purple and do a decorative seam, rather than trying to hide it. You can make it look like topstitching or blanket stitch or something like that. I have all these ideas for finishing things because... well, you know...
Posted by: Sheila on August 23, 2004 03:23 PMI'm voting for the purple as well. And now I will go be with my hubby for the "TMK just made a *knitting comment* and now the world shall end" ordeal. hehe
Now, if you are easily offended, please do not read any further. Stalker Rant follows.
How can anyone own a pet and not be willing to take care of them like they need to be taken care of? Do they not realize these are living, feeling creatures? Why why why would you purchase a pet and not read up on their care before hand to know if they are right for you? Someone needs to take those people and sit them inside a blank room. No windows, no stimulation, no human contact. Let's see how long it is before they start pulling their hair out. Grrrrrrr!!!
Ok. I'm done. I'm sorry. Just.....pick on someone your own size.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Posted by: Stalker Angie on August 23, 2004 04:06 PMStalker Angie, I agree. I've learned over the years that it is crucial to consciously stop, watch your pet, listen to what they're telling you, and then give them what they ask for. It can be hard and it can take a lot of time because you have to learn to speak "dog" or "cat" or "ferret" or "macaw," but in the end it's worth it. It can be sort of hard with Frankie because she has just one mode: The Stare. It would be helpful if she had different barks, or walked over to the door to the outside, or walked to her water bowl, but, no. She plants herself in front of you and stares into the depths of your soul until you finally get up and ask, "What do you want?"
The Garuda web site has some heart-wrenching stories about the different birds they have. It's even more heart-wrenching when you realize that these birds can live to 80!
I recently learned that some people who own turtles have to put clauses in their wills regarding what should happen to the turtle when they die because turtles are so long-lived that they will unquestionably outlive their owners. Imagine, a pet being handed down for three or four generations! It's almost sci-fi-ish, isn't it?
Sheila, my head is just spinning with all of your suggestions. The idea of decorative stitching had occurred to me but mostly as a cop-out along the lines of "what should I do if my mattress stitching turns out crappy?" "Why, pretend it's a decorative stitch I meant to do all along!"
Posted by: Ryan on August 23, 2004 04:32 PMcolor me purple. and i am not going to go look at the bird website since i cry at tv commercials. my kids call me sapmother.
Posted by: vanessa on August 24, 2004 03:11 AMI spent a major part of my morning yesterday looking at the websites attached to the bird sanctuary. Buddhism has always intrigued me and the pages just sucked me in.
I am sure you have made up your mind by now as to the seaming color question....If not, I vote for purple. Just because, that's why.
Posted by: Lisa in Oregon on August 24, 2004 07:09 AMAwww! It's so nice to be missed. I vote for purple too, even though I avoid seaming whenever possible because I'm a top-down raglan sweater gal.
Posted by: Debra on August 24, 2004 10:38 AMI'm with Debra. Top-down is always good. Ahem.
Those stripes! My god! I want a sweater just like that!
