We're All Entitled To Make a Few Mistakes...

I take a certain spine-tingling thrill in presenting The Scariest Thing You Will See This Halloween.

Not only does this make me look like a hooker, it makes me look like an ancient, claw-fingered, and slightly demented hooker who should be off the streets enjoying her remaining days in a rocking chair in front of a fire.

And the truly scary part? No alcohol was involved. I went to the store. I bought the polish. I put it on my nails. All without the consumption of fermented grain or fruit liquids. Oh, but you should have seen the look on The Mysterious K’s face when I showed up at her house on Saturday with this crap on my nails. With an expression of total horror—partly because she thought the nails were coyote ugly, and partly because she didn't yet know how I felt about them and was more afraid of my wrath if she insulted me than she was of the nails—she said, hestitantly, "You...aren't... going...to..wear...that...to...work...are...you?" Poor dear. The things I do to her...

And what’s in it for all of you? A once in a lifetime, carte blanche opportunity to post insulting comments on a blog, secure in the knowledge that you can’t possibly hurt the blogger's feelings. Er, if the comments are about my nails, that is.

Knitting Knews
Smokescreen Scarf: Frogged. I felt the world becoming prettier and prettier as I unraveled each row. That was truly a scarf that only a mother could love.

Crapyarn Sweater: One sleeve done. Right front done. A third of the way through the back. Truly mindless knitting, my favorite kind. I couldn't make a mistake if I tried. Hallelujah!

Faina Scarf: Row 70 of the second of the three main repeats done. Still a super-fun pattern. Everyone! Run out! Buy it! Knit it! (What do you mean I don't have that kind of mind control over my readers?)

And as evidence of some real progress on a project, the finished and almost-finished sleeve of the Baby Norgi. Yup, you are seeing about 100 stitches to the inch. Told you I'm a tight knitter...

Ah, hubris! The myths of the Greeks are filled with such tales: "I couldn't make a mistake if I tried." Taunt the gods, will you? What I foretell: You go to make the left front, but somehow end up with two right fronts....

It's not too late to appease the forces of nature that inevitably work to balance such prideful statements--emphasize the total error in judgement that encouraged you to cast on the Smokestack Scarf in the first place. Wave your gaudy nails about. Mention yet again the teeny teeny neck opening on the Norgi. Whatever. Just do it, and quick! Otherwise, I see a dropped stitch in your future. Just saying.

Sparkly blue nail polish? Love it! The more violently colored and metallic it is, the better, in my book. (But I only wear it on my toe nails, so unless it's summer or I'm at Aikido, the color of my toe nails is my own little secret. Good thing, too, since until yesterday they were a vivid metallic Barbie pink.

(Opens mouth to speak. Clamps it shut. Knits brow.)

The more I puzzle over women, the tighter I wrap myself in my monk's robes.

Posted by: Cuzzin Tom on October 25, 2004 10:43 AM

Well, Cuzzin Tom, it is obvious to anyone with the XX chromosome configuration that Ryan painted her nails to be perfectly color coordinated with her Baby Norgi project. I mean, really, what girl doesn't want to match her knitting? ;)

Actually, I kinda like the color, but then I'm with Melanie. I rarely polish my fingernails, but my toenails are usually some funky color or another to remind me of my purple hair days. It's a delusional tactic to make me think I haven't gotten old and boring.

Posted by: Kristen on October 25, 2004 11:45 AM

Nah, the blue doesn't bother me (you should see some of the stuff my friend Cyd paints her nails with) and I've no desire to insult. Seeing Baby Norgi reminds me that I need to get moving on my Dale baby sweater....

In my line of work, blue nails usually are NOT a good prognostic sign. Other than in a medical sense, however, if you have the aplomb to wear them, have at it! They are right up there with fuchsia hair and purple lipstick. (And if you are going to wear blue nails, they definitely should be sparkly.)

Seems that Melanie and I share a toe nail 'thing' ! Mine are a sparkly pale teal/turquoise called Peacock right now. :0)

Oh, pshaw! If you want to post the scariest thing we will see this Halloween, you'll have to try harder than that!!

Posted by: Norma on October 25, 2004 01:34 PM

aw, go for the funk! i just bought an astounding assortment of most metallic colors for my claws too- just because *i* am old doesn't mean my nails are too- right? why yes, i am a bit delusional today-

i am getting eager to see this crapyarn sweater- if it is fun to knit, it will be a winner regardless of its fiber content-

stay happy-

Don't you just love the Baby Norgi pattern? I've made two and enjoyed every minute of it. I like the blue and green with cream.

Posted by: Chery on October 25, 2004 02:33 PM

I love the nails. They are more punk than hooker. Don't ask me how I know.

And I have to agree with Janine. The first thing I thought of when I saw your off hand remark about "couldn't make a mistake if I tried" was what you could do to appease the gods before something horrible happened. The gods are vengeful. They are probably turning your nails blue under your nail polish as we type!

I think the Mysterious K was secretly hoping you would all express great horror and disgust at the color of my nails so that I would be discouraged from thinking along these lines again. But let me review the comments and see...nope, no great horror and disgust. In fact, the comments run along the lines of, "That? That's not so scary." And "Why, I'm wearing exactly that same color on my toes!" And "The brighter and the more metallic, the better!" And "How clever of Ryan to match her nail polish to her knitting project." Nope, I don't think these were at all the kinds of comments TMK was hoping for. Except for Cuzzin's Tom's, of course. But he's a boy; what does he know?

Chery, I'm kinda liking the Norgi project but I think size 0s and 1s are too small--but this is just a mega-swatch and learning experience for me so I wasn't too concerned about gauge. But it's been fun. I suspect I'll be hunting you up when it comes time to get everything sewn up and tacked down.

What'za-da-big-a-deal? They go well with JEANS...shouldn't this be our first priority in choosing colors?

Posted by: Linda "K" on October 25, 2004 05:16 PM

Sorry, Ryan, I just don't *get* the cadaverous look, even when it's sparkly. Eeeeek... perhaps *especially* when it's sparkly...

Jinkies. A girl disappears for a while and misses all sorts of fun but gets to come back to wonderfully blue finger nails? *sigh* All is right with the world. Ryan hun, I know how to get my hands on some fabulous stuff, dahling. Color changing. That's right, it changes colors with the temperature of your hands. If your hands are warm, inevitably the tips of your fingernails will be one color and gradually change to the other color on the main part of your nail. Sorta like tie dye. Not to worry. I know where to send it to. Just please make sure TMK does not have access to my address. That's really not how I want to meet her. So glad to be back. Missed all of you so very much.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Oh, all right. Eeeuuww. There, happy now?
(Actually, I'm can't stand really brightly painted nails. Don't know why. Never could abide them. Must have a defect in my genes or something. Pale pink is about as dark as I can stand them. TMK, we can look horrified together.)

LOVE the nails!! Though I'm a "toenail-polish-only" gal too, I almost feel like running out to the drugstore and getting sparkly blue nail polish for my fingernails. And I CAN wear them to work! You rock!

Posted by: Diana on October 26, 2004 04:56 AM

I cannot abide nail polish of any kind. Makes my fingernails feel heavy, slows down my knitting. That said, I have been somewhat vaccinated against hidious nail polish by the presence of my three young daughters. Still, if you were my kid, I'd suggest you took it off before we went to gramma's. Just saying.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you though, since you wrote "I couldn't make a mistake if I tried" , thus cuing the nail polish to fulfill it's destiny and burst into firey metalic flame, immolating the sweater.

I like the nails. And I am so excited about your sweater progress:-)

Posted by: Debra on October 26, 2004 08:29 AM

Chickie...Those nails are "the bomb"!! Whaddaya mean, TMK don't like 'em?

See...I got Em started painting her nails (mostly toes, but sometimes fingers too) within a year of our becoming a couple. We now own, ahem..."many" (let's just leave it at that)...bright, garish, bizarre, weird and utterly fun colors which horrify the children greatly. Of course, that IS part of the fun, eh?

Besides, what great nails you have! They NEED to be polished so that they attract attention...they are bootiful Ryan...absolutely bootiful. ;)

My toenails are currently a LOUD metallic copper. My fingernails are unpolished, unhappily, because I type all day and I can't keep polish on them without looking chippy and tres tacky. L

I will stand quietly behind TMK and remind her that you are a woman who likes to do things the way you like to do them.. but see? I am behind her and honestly.. I don't do the nails thing. If I do anything I polish them with a buff pad. That is the most you'll get out of me. For some reason I am just not a sparkly kinda girl, or even a makeup one. (Must be REALLY important for me to put clown paste on my face) I have enough trouble getting my butt outta bed and into the shower in the morning, not to mention making my hair look presentable. I had a bonding moment with Stephanie over that.. my hair has its own mind. I am just glad I can bribe it with chocolate sometimes.

I have nail envy right now. I wish my nails looked that fabulous! I love the color! I do, it's sad but I do.
