First and most importantly, welcome back, Stalker Angie! The Mossy Cottage posse is whole again! Now, understandably, some local Dear Readers have asked me, one eyebrow sharply raised, “ ‘Stalker Angie?’ What’s that all about?” Not to fret, Dear Readers. I haven’t found a horse head in my bed, I haven't been flooded with psychotic love notes composed out of newspaper type (especially since Angie's 6'6" husband would have something to say about that), I don’t get breather phone calls every hour on the hour in the wee hours of the morning, and I don’t see someone vanish out of my line of vision every time I turn my head. She is just A Very Faithful Reader—the kind that went back and read all 100+ entries when she found my blog—so I send her a virtual wink, a nose tweak, and a "Hidey-ho!"
The most exciting things that have happened so far this week is that the ventilation fan in The Mysterious K's bathroom stopped working, and I had a broken window fixed. Bored? So'm I. You have no idea. Since I can't even hope to manufacture an interesting story out of such a mundane week, instead let's trot out some Kooky Krafts—including two very unsettling ones—shall we?
Whimsical art made from drinking straws. The site is in Portuguese but the pictures say all they need to say. Look for the little critter whose wings are made of pistachio shells. (Odd. All of a sudden, I have an overwhelming desire to race home and watch "A Bug's Life." TMK, guess what we're doing this weekend?)
Some truly troubling hats that look more like intestines than headware.
And speaking of intestines, from Dear Reader Anne, an article about an artist who makes fabric sculptures depicting road kill, squishedness, guts, blood, and all, I kid you not.
Oh, and TMK, one last thing. The final vote: 13 in favor of the blue nail polish, 5 against. I would feel more vindicated and would let out a huge whoop and a holler, if my vote weren't one of the 5 against...
Ewwwww! There are a lot of famous artists that make things that I would never want around me - ever. Spooky crazy looking schtuff that makes me wonder what their inner life is like. Too much trauma?...not hugged enough as a child?...whatever. I guess working it out in your chosen craft is cool=therapy. But do they have to share? :P
Posted by: Susan Aguirre on October 27, 2004 02:00 PMThank you ever so much for the big welcome back, Blog Mistress!! But it makes me sad that there would be new Dear Readers who had to ask about me. I was gone much too long. But, in my defense, it is difficult to stalk from the hospital. But I am back to full stalking speed. Ok, truthfully, my hubby finally caught me last week as I was hitch-hiking my way to Washington to kick start the commune. Curses, foiled again.
I'm not sure which bothers me more....those hats or road kills toys. They are both products of what have to be disturbed minds. I'm with Dear Reader Susan.....someone needed more hugs as a child.
Hope everyone has a great day!!!!
PS. lurk lurk stalk stalk (snicker snort)
Posted by: Stalker Angie on October 27, 2004 02:07 PMBoy, you really tested me today. Just when I posted a bog ole blog posting on tolerating other's different opinions I had to go see those hats. Those hats...
She sure is an enthusiastic and creative person! (how was that for supporting her art?)
Do you think the background on that site was to hypnotize us into loving those hats?
Totally with you on the Bug's Life thing.... They're oddly compelling.
The hats, unfortunately, not.
Roadkill: I grew up in northern Minnesota. Seen far more of it in my lifetime than I ever wanted to. Art memorializing it? Um, not my cuppa tea.
Posted by: Nathania on October 27, 2004 03:02 PMCrikey! I don't look good in hats, but maybe now I see why -- I just haven't found the RIGHT hat for me. Are those for sale, d'ya think? I didn't stick around in the site long enough to find out. But you can bet I'm back on my way over there to see, and I'll wear it to Rhinebeck next year. Incorrigible, incorrigible!
Posted by: Norma on October 27, 2004 05:34 PMit's just an unsettling week all around- i blame it all on the whole baseball situation-
courtesy of a blog i was reading, i found a finnish knitting magazine online:
http://www.ullaneule.net/0104/
(like there aren't enough patterns floating around in english that utterly confuse me) and all the online translators i can locate make the directions even more impossible-
i'm in east texas- regrettably roadkill is part of the landscape design along many of the roads- ugh, tmi!
stay happy-
Posted by: barb in texas on October 27, 2004 05:34 PMHey Ryan,
My boy's toilet stopped working. And I have a broken window in my dining room. Coincidence? I think not. I like the straw thing, but I'm not clicking on any link to roadkill. I live in the Bronx. Due to R-d S-x activity, we already feel like that.
I liked the straw art - they were very pleasing. The hats made me CRY they were so scary!! "Babar Deconstructed" indeed! How did you ever come upon that site?? I couldn't even check out the roadkill site; I was too distressed by the hats....
btw, I actually did go out and bought blue nail polish and wore it to work yesterday. My 4-yr-old son told me my nails were "super-beautiful!".
Posted by: Diana on October 28, 2004 05:36 AMLoved the drinking straw critters. The dragon and the cockatoo were particularly awe-inspiring.
The hats? Oh....the hats. And the roadkill. Words fail me. Well, *polite* words fail me. Oy.
There are two things more scary than those hats: the strangly realistic heads they were sitting on and the fact that some of them were marked 'sold'. Thanks for the early morning freak-out! ;-0
Posted by: Tami on October 28, 2004 08:48 AMHmmm. I think the road kill site and the hat site should combine....
On second thought, the hats already look like road kill to me...
They are just wrong. W-R-O-N-G...as in, not right, disturbing, distressing...wrong.
wrong.
I am now thoroughly distressed and must go get an expensive coffee drink to calm myself down. L
