Take Me (and My Yarn and My Needles and My Pattern and My Friends) Out to the Ballgame

Update 6/24/05: All of the tickets have been reserved! See the the bottom of this blog entry for a list of the people who have tickets reserved for them.

-----------------------------

baseball3a.jpgOkay, local knitters—think quick! (Sharp, rapid and annoying fingers-snaps in your face.) What are you doing the night of Thursday, July 28? If the answer is “nothing” or even “dunno,” then join, me, The Mysterious K, MaryB and Mr. MaryB at Safeco Field for “Stitch ‘N Pitch” night—a night dedicated to baseball and knitting!

The Background, or Whuh????:
This is the real deal, dreamed up and sponsored by the Mariners themselves, thanks to two female executives in the front office who knit, and the folks in the Mariners' marketing department who, at first, teased the crap out of the women and then had a “lightbulb moment” and realized that a knitting night might be just the ticket for getting some butts in some seats. Thus was born “The First Annual Mariners Stitch ‘N Pitch Night!”

The Details:

Date: Thursday, July 28, 2005.

Time: Game starts at 7:05 but the Mariners are encouraging us to come early (the gates open at 5:05) because there will be yarn and craft vendors there for us to schmooze with. In fact, Pacific Fabrics has signed on to be the main sponsor of the evening.

Who: MaryB and I have reserved a block of 40 tickets and are offering the seats to knitters (duh) and their knitting or non-knitting friends, spouses and SO’s, anyone who wants to come and join us for a fun, unique night.

Cost: Thanks to the Mariners, the tickets, which are normally $17, are discounted to $10.00 each.

baseball4.jpgThe Kicker: Because we reserved a block of 40 tickets, we will be able to have our collective group name (The Dulaan Knitters, or some such) up on The Big Screen! Don’t worry if you couldn’t care less about the Dulaan project. Join us anyway, and be part of the adventure!

What You Should Do:
If you want to join us, please email me your name and how many tickets you want to buy. We’ll work out the final details, such as how to get your payments to us and the tickets to you and where/when we should all meet, over time. And remember, non-knitting spouses, SO’s, and friends are invited! If more than 40 people are interested, the tickets will, of course, be sold first come, first served.

Come see our new, sizzlin’ hot Mariner rookies kick some Cleveland Indian bootay!! Or, way more importantly, just come knit with a bunch o' wacky people...

What an excellent idea! I'll be knitting with you in spirit (it would be a long commute from Boston). Maybe other ball clubs will pick up on the promotion.

Posted by: Kat on June 22, 2005 10:50 AM

Oh man...I'm working that night. :(

Posted by: Jessica on June 22, 2005 10:51 AM

Wow what a cool idea! I hope they have one ton o' knitters there and that Dulaan sees its name up in lights.

Posted by: CarolineF on June 22, 2005 11:02 AM

Ubah....ummm....ubahhaah......hmmmm. *ahem* I wanna go!!!! I wanna freakin' go! You guys get to have all the fun! Whine moan whine whine moan. That'll be all.

Well now that sounds like fun! I hope it does so well that it catches on everywhere. I've never been to a live baseball game (despite living 1 hour from the Astros)and to be able to hide behind my yarn as a safety blanket? Heck yeah! I should send you a little something to take with you so I can live vicariously through it. Maybe a teeny tiny teddy bear in Mariner colors. Gonna hafta think about this one.

Hey guys if your near Ms. Ryan you need to sign up and go to support the gang!

Hope everyone has a great day!

What a freaking kickass idea.

Posted by: Em on June 22, 2005 11:09 AM

Ahem. Do you think my boss would buy it if I called in sick, and then she saw the game and put two and two together?? This is such a great idea!

Posted by: Lorette on June 22, 2005 11:14 AM

Lorette: With all those knitting needles flying, and foul balls sailing around, don't you think we might *need* a doctor sitting with us! It would be a service to the knitting community. ;-) TMK

Posted by: The Mysterious K on June 22, 2005 11:19 AM

*de-lurks*
If I thought it was reasonable to tell my boss, "No, thank you" and make the drive up from Portland, I would so be there. Baseball? Knitting? Totally.

Posted by: beth on June 22, 2005 11:38 AM

Ok, why do I keep seeing that people can't go when they have a month to plan for it? I'm so confused. Everyone noticed that it's in July right? Not next week? Ok. I'm done. Again. No really. I'll just hush now. Hee. :)

Posted by: Stalker Angie on June 22, 2005 11:45 AM

I'm going to try my darndest to be there. I'll talk to the hubby tonight and see if we can swing it. We'll have to pick up the kiddo and head over after work, but I'm thinking we'll probably be up for it.

One question, do you think you could handle a rambunctious four year old? I guess we will have yards and yards of yarn so if he does get to out of hand we can always just put it to work and tie him up ;)

I want to support such a great event!! Go M's!

Posted by: Sam on June 22, 2005 12:03 PM

We have 15 commitments so far for tickets, so if you are at all considering it, please let us know right away! At ten bucks it's a deal and a half! Rarely does one get a chance to see a baseball game amongst such fine people!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE: there will be T-SHIRTS!!!! We can't forget those--all of those with the Dulaan knitters will be getting a FREE Stitch & Pitch shirt, compliments of the Mariners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S STILL MORE!!!!!!! Because we have reserved a block of 40 seats, we get our name on the BIG SCREEN READERBOARD: the entire STADIUM will be clapping for the DULAAN PROJECT KNITTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There will be pictures for all of you who can't make it, but if you are at all in the area, or want to come, please do!

Damn, that's a FINE idea. Is the price of a plane ticket included in that $10 deal?

Posted by: Norma on June 22, 2005 12:08 PM

First the garden party and now this. I'm out of my ever lovin' midwest mind! If jealousy is a sin, I'm on the slippery slope! Still, I'm compelled to say, "Go Tribe!"

Posted by: marylee on June 22, 2005 12:11 PM

[whine]I wanna t-shirt![/whine] Would the Mariners consider selling t-shirts (proceeds to F.I.R.E. of other worthy charity of course) to those of us who can't fly across the country for a baseball game? I promise to wear it to the next Red Sox game I go to.

Posted by: Kat on June 22, 2005 12:31 PM

This is a great idea. I think Baseball and knitting go great together. Ever since I started knitted I ALWAYS take me knitting when we go to the Royals games (ok, so that has only been about 5 times). Hopefully this will spread to other teams.

I'm in! I'll be with the Purlygirls brood

Posted by: Diana on June 22, 2005 12:55 PM

LOL! I was telling my coworker about this and said, "And there are even going to be yarn vendors" and she started acting out someone climbing up and down the stands carring a big box of yarn strapped around their neck, calling out "Get your cashmere! Get your cashmere here!" When I finally stopped laughing, I thought, yeah, they should do that! Can't you see it? A twenty passed down the row, then a couple balls of Debbie Bliss Angora passed back. Everyone would get to feel the sweet fuzzy stuff. The colors would be so enticing. Men would tap women on the shoulder and ask, "So...how do you do that?"

Posted by: Jenn on June 22, 2005 01:05 PM

Emailed you. Gotta see if I can get childcare. I am SO there! Where are the seats?

Posted by: Patti on June 22, 2005 01:30 PM

Jenn: This is a baseball game! The fuzzy pink Debbie Bliss would be thrown to the purchaser. ;-) TMK

Norma Dear, I've just about had it with all the NW folks having all the fun. I'll take the week off, drive up to you and "kidnap" you off to Washington state for a couple of days then mysteriously you'll return home with no memory of your ordeal or of your abductors. Anyone along the way wanna be "kidnapped" by the Stalker? I can rent a van. Or a bus. Just let me know.

Posted by: Stalker Angie on June 22, 2005 01:53 PM

I took knitting (or was it a book?) with me to a ballgame when I was in high school, and got chided by my mother for acting uninterested in the company I was with. (It was a church outing, and I think it must have been a book, actually.) But I've always thought a ballgame would be a great place to knit--provided you don't drink so much beer that you can't follow the stitch pattern. What a great idea, though!

Posted by: Becca on June 22, 2005 01:57 PM

Oh man. I'm on the WRONG COAST. Ptooie. THis is *such* a great idea and I'm wicked jealous. Have a great time.

Posted by: Melanie on June 22, 2005 03:20 PM

Yes! We're soooo there! I've sent you my email request to get in on the action and my co-worker and I are already putting in the time off from work. Oh yeah, I guess the rest of the family will be coming too. :)

Posted by: Gina on June 22, 2005 05:01 PM

Well, clearly you didn't reserve enough tickets. You underestimate your salesmanship, Ryan! Stalker Angie, I'll take you up on that. I'll be on the side of the road with my bag packed.

Posted by: Norma on June 22, 2005 06:22 PM

Stalker Angie, I'm here in Houston, real close - could you swing by on your way to Norma and pick me up?

(I can just see your little bus criss-crossing all over the continent picking up knitters, all trying to get to Ryan... .)

Posted by: Childe on June 23, 2005 09:47 AM

*whinge* I wanna, I wanna! */whinge*

*sigh. I mean man. I am NEVER gonna get to hang with you guys.. and you do all the coolest stuff. I'm with norma, stalkerangie, I'll be in south philly near the cheesesteaks. I'll have yarn in my bag and be ready to go.

Posted by: anj on June 23, 2005 11:16 AM

I'm so excited! There was a little scare, involving no more tickets, but Ryan pulled through for me, and I get to go!!! No worries Stalker Angie. We'll all be talking about how funny you are and knitting up a storm. Just think...if you could come, notice there is not a word mentioned about....*gasp* crochet. You'd be forced to knit.

Posted by: sam on June 23, 2005 03:01 PM

Now, Sam, don't be too quick to jump the gun. We will have one lovely, baseball-loving crocheter in our midst. Neener, neener.

Glad you'll be able to be there!

Posted by: Ryan on June 23, 2005 04:39 PM

What a great idea! Have fun, y'all!

Posted by: Susie on June 23, 2005 06:20 PM

Wanna know a deep dark secret? I started my obsession with yarn, crocheting. Shhh....don't tell.

But knitting won me over to the dark side and I've never looked back. Believe me, I've got lots of love for crocheters too.

Can't wait!
