Who Knew This Game Would Actually Require Rules?!

I must say, you Canadians are a wily bunch!

As much as I would heart to mark off Saskatchewan and Alberta, dear Amy S., it’s not as much about the location of the post office as it is about the location of the person who did the knitting. Take Mary Beth, fer example. She lives in not-Delaware (dunno where exactly) but is mailing a box that contains items knit by her sister in Delaware, so I can now officially add Delaware to my list. So, in Canadian-speak, if something is knit by someone who lives in (…yet another quick Google search for the name of some Canadian provinces…) Northwest Territories yet is mailed in Quebec, I would consider it a Northwest Territories item.

And, no, Celtic Knitter, just because you knit something from yarn sent to you by someone who lives on Prince Edward Island...well, you know where this is going.

However, I think if Carrie were to, as she suggested, fly to Nunavut, knit something in Nunavut, and mail it from Nunavut, that would have to count as a Nunavut item, wouldn’t it? And then I would have to find a way to (a) thaw her frozen extremities; (b) reimburse her for all her expenses and (c) have her committed to a mental institution for being way too caught up in this Dulaan craziness.

And now, for all you Americans out there, because this process is making me realize what a clueless ninny I am, here is the official list of Canadian provinces and territories:

Alberta
British Columbia
Manitoba
New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador
Northwest Territories
Nova Scotia
Nunavut
Ontario
Prince Edward Island
Quebec
Saskatchewan
Yukon Territory

Read it, learn it, memorize it, eat the paper when you’re done.

So, Canada-wise, I can now officially mark off Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia. More, dear Canadians, more!

On the United States front, I added California, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, New Hampshire and Wisconsin to Monday's list of 18, so we are up to 24, 3 fewer than last year, 26 below our goal of 50. There is a faint possibility, although so far only very faint, that my sister will be able to make a hat and mail it from Alaska while on a cruise up there, so keep your fingers crossed. More, dear Americans, more!

Although my plan had been to write about last weekend’s great watermelon-planting adventures and the outcome of the Staring Contest With Fate Sweater, since Dulaan seems to be the order of the day, this seems as good a time as any to announce TMK and Ryan’s Last Ever Dulaan Knit-In or, hopefully, if the weather cooperates, Knit-Out.

What: A casual, open-house-type gathering of knitters who want to drink, eat, chat, share, and work on Dulaan projects.

When: Saturday, May 27, 2006, 1pm-6pm-ish.

potluck.GIFWhere: TMK’s house in the Seattle Northend. Email me if you are interested in attending and I’ll send you the details.

What to Bring: As always, the party will be a "snack luck" so bring snack food to share, plus your beverage of choice (although we’ll provide regular and diet sodas, coffee, and iced tea); yarn and patterns to share; any Dulaan projects you want to work on; and any finished Dulaan items you want me to mail.

RSVP: Even if you only think you might come, please email me to RSVP so we can get a general idea of how many people will be there. Again, I’ll send you phone, address and direction information in return.

P.S. Mary Lou's free donated-on-behalf-of-Dulaan pattern mistakenly had a price on it, so a new version of the sweater has been posted, sans price.

Ooh, I'm gonna be in your Washington that weekend (as opposed to the Washington that I live near). I'll have to talk to everyone and see where we will be exactly (all I know is that we are going to be out on the boat so that means anywhere from Gig harbor to the San Juans) but I would love to join you if I can.

Posted by: Jayme on May 3, 2006 12:08 PM

I'm in and might bring a friend (shut up! I do have friends!)

Posted by: Rebecca on May 3, 2006 12:56 PM

Well, sadly, Jayme, neither Gig Harbor nor the San Juans are anywhere NEAR where the party will be, but I'll send you the info anyway. What's your email address?

Actually, Nunavut isn't really cold in Spring/Summer, those seasons are just a lot shorter there than in, say, Minnesota. Or another state where you get all 4 seasons (no matter what people in a place like Tennessee say, hee hee). :D Actually, I can name all 50 states if given enough time, but I couldn't possibly place them on a map. I had to laugh at one of my rez friends one year who attempted to name the provinces and territories - and got 3, including guessing that Toronto was a province. LOL. That's OK though, like I say my Amercian geography knowledge is just as bad.

YAY! I not only got a mention, I got a WHOLE paragraph, AND the threat of involuntary incarceration! WOOHOO! I have ARRIVED, people!

Posted by: Carrie on May 3, 2006 03:43 PM

Grr. And you choose to do it on the one weekend I've accepted two extra shifts at work. Yes, I'm insane enough to drive down there to knit. No, I'm not insane enough to turn down a lot of money for working instead.

It's my second job, where I don't actually do much of anything, so I'll have my own personal little Dulaan knit-in all by myself that day at work.

Do I sound pathetic enough yet?

Posted by: Rabbitch on May 3, 2006 05:17 PM

Last Ever? LAST EVER?? what do you mean by this ominous sounding statement?
It takes me at least a couple of years to get the hang of something.

I could drive up to Oklahoma, through Arkansas. I'll knit something up on the way there and mail it. Then knit something whilst in Oklahoma and mail that from there. So two more states. Oh, my Mom is in Oklahoma so it's not as crazy as it might have first seemed. LOL Kansas is covered but I might be able to squeeze into the corner of Missouri if need be.

Hi
This is my first visit to the site. I live in the Canadian province called Quebec, the pesky province with an identity crisis. The one that often thinks about divorcing itself from Canada. But I digress. I'm in. What do I have to do?

Posted by: Meredith on May 3, 2006 05:58 PM

Just so you know how fun you all are, I briefly considered this. Even though I usually *get off work* at 1 pm, here in my town a couple of hours away...

(I do however, have a pile of hats collecting. And if my state senator had her way, they would be from EAST Washington.)

I wasn't going to speak up until I'd actually mailed the box, but if you're tallying up promises, you can add Missouri to your list.

Tres bon!!! We have a Quebecker!!! Bienvenue!! Knit something for a child in Mongolia.

Yeah, we Canadian are a wily bunch!! We are constantly overshadowed by the United States, so we get very excited to be acknowledged!! Wow, and Americans are even learning our geography!! I think we deserve a national award for this one.

hmmmmmm...mary beth's sister in delaware counts but my friend in tennessee doesn't? i'd contemplate sulking but it takes far too much energy (and looks pretty damn silly besides ;o))

honest you can add tennessee to the list...(see previous entry's comment, possibly lost in the canadian discussion *grin*)

thanks for the sweater, mary lou :o) got it printed off and hope to cast on soonly (just have to see if i have any needles free!)

ryan,if i'm not being too nosy/cheeky/presumptuous...why is it that this is the last year for the dulaan project? :o| or have i missed an explanation someplace?

Dearest Ryan, Lovey,

Canada calling, darling. And I represent the province of Saskatchewan. Though you haven't received a parcel from me, yet, it will get there by the deadline. Last year both my aunt, also from here, and I sent in our items. She will be sending hers along shortly, too.

If it helps, I used to live in the Northwest Territories and could have something mailed from there as well, just to round out your lists. Let me know on that one, my dear.

In the mean time, my mother, who was born in Saskatchewan, has already sent her box to you. Unfortunately her current post mark is British Columbia because she's visiting her grandson there this year. Does that count anyway?

Best of luck for your goals and we'll be sure to do our part to help. Nice of you to remember us in your plans! :)

(Please read the entire preceding comment with tongue in cheek and a Mrs. Howell accent!!!)

Thanks for the link Ryan, it just so happens that my last umpteen photos were about Dulaan!
And I am the NJ sister, which you already know since you put The Garden State (cough cough) on your list.

Off to make some mittens...

Little toques are on their way from Alberta. You can check that off your list. Last year there was an assortment of sweaters sent but since this year I moved from California to Alberta I am really hoping that a smaller collection from a previously unrepresented province is just as helpful. :)

Posted by: Catherine on May 4, 2006 10:29 AM

Curses! Foiled again! :)

But I am ecstatic to see that Saskatchewan and Alberta are now being represented properly and without need for my machinations.

Guess I'll just send my so-called "California" box then. But regardless of my physical location, my heart is in the Prairies.

(and I might just knit and post a hat from Calgary while I'm there, to boost the Canadian content)

Posted by: Amy S. on May 4, 2006 12:43 PM

Yeah, two more provinces!! Ok . . . I'll shut up now. :)

Posted by: Celtic Knitter on May 4, 2006 06:23 PM

My husband drives long haul across Canada. He's been everywhere except up North! He is on his was back from Quebec, driving in New Brunswick as I type, and was to Newfoundland just a couple of days ago! If he knew how to knit I would make him knit a hat at each truck stop he stays in in each province! He normally goes from Nova Scotia to Alberta, so that would take into account 8 provinces! Maybe knitters could throw items onto his flatdeck as he drives by... They'd have to label the items so we know which province they're from, though! Somehow I don't see it happenin'....
