No Sno

The only thing better than a snow day is a snow day that you know is coming, a snow day the media has, in a frenzy of panicked, end-of-days, meteorological reporting, promised you, a day you can predict with great certainty you will spend huddled under the down comforter for extra hours in the morning, only getting up when it’s time for some hot tea and buttered toast with apricot jam.

And there’s nothing worse than a snow day that completely and utterly craps out on you. Deceives you. Betrays you. Leaves you high and dry. It was a balmy 39 when I woke up this morning, and we had had a pathetically light dusting of the weird, hard, round snow nodules we get around here sometimes, but other than that—bupkus. The worst part? Last night I went to the store and stocked up for the coming of the “blizzard days.” And ate everything. So now I’m grumpy, bloated, and consumed with guilt at my lack of willpower and my inability to plan for emergencies. Well, no, I planned well…it’s just…you know…everything’s gone.

Since all I’m knitting right now is the second one of my Trekking socks, I’ll wrap this short entry up with two more photos of some of TMK’s spinning and, since it’s been a while, some Kooky Krafts.

This is superwash merino, dyed by Dicentra Designs, purchased from Crown Mountain Farms:

Plus one being sold on eBay.

I’m working on a pattern for how to make a big-ass tote out of one of mine. All I need is an unbroken block of time like, oh, I don't know, a snow day.

you crack me up. seriously. a bra purse? HAHAHAHAHA.

Posted by: anj on January 10, 2007 12:07 PM

Sorry, can't spare a bra for a purse; I need all mine for boob storage. :) My sympathies on the Snow Day of Betrayal - I hate that! I live in Ohio, where at least three times per winter they tell us we're gonna get clobbered with a pile of snow, and then...nothing. Man, it's aggravating!

I keep my new mp3 player tucked inside my bra, it's made to stop things swinging about so it all seems logical to me.

I first saw the lovely Dicentra colors at spinning conference. I'm not surprised you like them! So bright and cheerful. The colorway names are fun, too.

Speaking of spinning conferences, will we be seeing you and TMK in Coeur d'Alene this summer? http://www.nwrsa.org/pages/conference.html

Personally, I'm glad the Big Snow fizzled -- sorry! But I had an early morning meeting that I couldn't miss and was stressing all night about how bad the roads might be. I was thrilled to see a scant inch of snow...

Mine would hold bridge toll. Maybe.

Posted by: marylee on January 10, 2007 01:03 PM

Denise, in my heart of hearts, I know it was better for everyone how the snow turned out--or didn't--but I still hear that tea and toast calling my name.

As for the Coeur d'Alene conference, we're pretty sure that, given our lifestyle, if we were to cross the border into Idaho, we'd be shot on the spot, so probably not. Although the REAL truth is TMK and I haven't even talked about it. (Of course, it would be a little ironic if you and I, who both live here, would have to go to Idaho to meet!)

Here in the Portland area we got the same big build up. And then nothing. Until 10am when it snowed like crazy (snowflakes the size of small children) and then by 11 it was sunny with blue skies. Ah well.

Don't worry about eating all your emergency supplies. Think of it as storing them in a safe place and taking them with you everywhere.

Kooky indeed. First of all, my bras work HARD and I am just not in enough need of a purse that I would start making them out of my old underwear.

Alas, the only cleavage I have, I sit on. The only bra I have for this project is SO heavily pushed and padded, it would be only good to hold some spare change...........sigh. BUT I do have to admit, when I wear that bad boy, I do feel invincible in it...........and ya just can't cut up invicibility ya know! :)

Yeah, what was up with those snow nodules? I got a bunch of them, too. They felt like packing material.

My power went out about 4PM yesterday. I kept thinking, "I should totally buy a fax machine, so that I can go somewhere else, and keep calling the fax, waiting for it to answer so I know I can go back home!"

Posted by: erika on January 10, 2007 02:15 PM

Oh man, the spinning shots are always so lovely. Go TMK! And I too was pretty disappointed to wake up this morning and realize that my run to the store last night for emergency supplies was all for nothing. Hrmph!

They were just wrong about WHEN it would snow, apparently. I just walked to the post office, bank, and library, just at the right time to enjoy the blizzard.

Everyone, concentrate hard: Thursday snow day Thursday snow day Thursday snow day Thursday snow day...

Posted by: Melinda on January 10, 2007 04:14 PM

Um, yeah.

I got about an inch of snow overnight. (I live a little north of Everett, where they were saying it'd hit hardest.)

And now I'm totally blaming you for the huge flakes and snow-buildup I'm getting now.

Posted by: Christina on January 10, 2007 04:55 PM

Well I got blasted. It snowed 2 inches in 30 mins very early this morning and I drove to work in a white-out. More followed several times during the day. Now, I am from the midwest and can handle snow - but I wouldn't mind it if we could maybe salt the roads out here.
Black ice = very bad!

Yup, it's totally Ryan's fault for stirring up the snow mojo. I just peered out and noticed that things are getting mighty white out there. It's purty, but does not bode well for the morning commute. Good news: no important meetings tomorrow, so if necessary I can heed the Call of the Toast. :)

I wouldn't worry about Coeur d'Alene, Ryan & TMK. It's a tourist town; lynching just ain't good for business! lol Seriously, though, I hope you give it some thought. Conference is a blast!

Posted by: Denise in Kent, WA on January 10, 2007 07:29 PM

oh, Ryan --- why did you have to tempt the snow gods? I spent four and a half hours in my car last night, going from Redmond to West Seattle (which, for the non-Seattlites, should take about 45 minutes in rush hour traffic -- and only two hours in really hideous traffic).

and the worst of it was that my knitting was in the trunk of my car. I would have had plenty of time to knit while stopped. :(

Bras as purses: Disturbing.

One of the links amused me..."stop throwing away your old bras... make them into a purse!"

Most women I know wear their bras until they are practially in shreds!

Posted by: Lisa in Oregon on January 11, 2007 08:34 AM

A great many things seem to go on in the world of crafting that are better left undone. Somewhere, some evil mastermind is determined to make every innocent knitter/sewer who practices traditional and cherished crafts seem like kooks who can't get enough maribou to satisfy their bra-purse habit. Besides, the bras I need to hold up the girls are expensive! I need to keep them where they belong.

Posted by: lyssa on January 11, 2007 09:49 AM

Ahem. Well, I'm reading this on Thursday and kidlet's school is closed because of snow. I hope you were prepared!

Posted by: Patti on January 11, 2007 12:42 PM

Yup, you did this. Bet you wash your car when the sun is supposed to come out too, huh? The terrace part of Mountlake Terrace is frozen solid and slick as something that is really slick.

I'm in the same boat as marylee. Maybe if I folded a fiver up really small... I suppose next time I look at a bra and think 'I could fit my shopping in that', now I know I really could. Would go down really well at Tesco.

Posted by: weeza on January 11, 2007 01:21 PM

Hey, yall--stop blaming the messenger. Ryan did NOT do this! I did.

Let's tie the Dulaan and bra things together--I'm thinking great big G-cup thingies with padding (tho, if you were a g-cup, would you want padding?) as lining for a hat! Whatdya think? Am I a genius, or what?

Posted by: camela on January 11, 2007 02:20 PM

Thanks for the chuckles. A purse bra, heh.

Posted by: Barb on January 12, 2007 11:24 AM

I know I shouldn't say this but I would like some snow. We haven't had any in our corner of Connecticut! It just doesn't feel like winter.
I hate when I pig out, too. Even while you are in the process of overeating some smarter part of yourself is telling you to stop. Not listening to that part is always a mistake.
Went to a food warehouse store (with an excellent on-site bakery) yesterday with college-age son and ended up buying an apple pie, cheesecake, brownies and cookies. I can hear them all calling me now. Must resist.
I have luck lately putting a small amount of dessert in a snack size cup and eating it very slowly. It really is those first five bites that taste the best!
