I Am Defeated On So Many Levels

Something has gone completely wacko with my commenting system, and I have no idea how to fix it. So, to those of you who tried to post comments to my last entry and got a message saying I needed to approve your message before it could be fixed, trust me--that wasn't me; it was a gremlin. Functions are somehow getting turned on and off behind the scenes faster than I can fix them, mostly because I have no blog-software fixing abilities. And this morning I discovered that I can't even get to the Web page where I can approve the comments. I'm starting to think the sensor that's in control of the soda vending machine is also in control of my blogging software. I've tried doing the arms-in-the-air gymnast's gesture in front of my monitor but it doesn't seem to be doing any good.

That being said, I want to make sure no one misses this gem, a poem by Cathy-Cate which she posted in the last entry before things went all wonky:

Let me tell you a story
'bout a knitter named Ryan
who was going to the gym each day
At first she didn't know
How to make the machines go
and she hoped she could just slink away.

But then the StairStepper got movin'
and Ryan found her groove, &
she said, "This ain't so bad, TMK!
But wait, where are the brakes?
I can't get off! For heaven's sake!
I may never leave the YMCA!

It's these sorts of things that make blogging--and dealing with annoying features that keep turning themselves on and off--worth it. Thank you, Cathy-Cate!

ribbon.gifSo, okay, I will admit defeat. We counted the soaps that we're going to bundle with the ribbon dishcloths and we have...59. Then we counted the dishcloths and we have...five. Hmmm. Can you see that I'm making that "balancing" gesture in the air with my hands?

It doesn't help that the other people at work who were going to knit the dishcloths have bailed. The five? Knit by Yours Truly. Soooo, anyone else out there, especially local folks, interested in knitting one? Just one? I'm looking for maybe 15 or 20 knitters total. The cloths can be any color (we're not sticking necessarily to the cancer-color schemes because we want a colorful display to lure people in), but they need to be cotton, obviously, and need to be this pattern. The good news is you have until the end of May. Did I mention you need to knit just one? Email me at rymorriss at yahoo dot com if you're interested.

I can has comment?

Posted by: Erika on March 5, 2008 01:53 PM

LMAO @ Erika's comment.
I think I can commit to one dishcloth, but I ain't promising anything. Before I try, though, can you tell me, in the pattern, what B3 stands for?

Posted by: Carrie on March 5, 2008 01:57 PM

Carrie, B3 stands for "Border 3" and it represents the three stitches you knit in garter stitch along the edges of the dishcloth. Good question! I had just gotten so used to it that I forgot it wasn't "standard."

Posted by: Ryan on March 5, 2008 02:00 PM

B3 must be the 3 border stitches in garter st, though slightly obscure.

Well, gee, after such a nice shout-out, I think I'd better knit a dishcloth or two! I knit for a breast cancer walk here last fall.

You may want to tell people to sing the 'poem' to the tune of "Charlie and the MTA", though, or it loses much of its impact, such as it is! Unless they've never heard the original. In which case, they're missing out. You or I or the Kingston Trio will have to sing it for them.

You can has comment apparently.

I have been working with computers, ahem, a long time. I have found, over the years, to get computers and programs to behave, you must have the appropriate contempt for the application or system. They can be replace, and you MUST (yes, a capital must) let them know who is the boss. YOU are in charge, and if said computer or software is not working, then IT can be replaced. You are irreplaceable, IT is not. Tell it! (Spicy sentence enhancers are allowed.)

I think I can commit to one cloth since it doesn't have to be done until May. I may even have some pink-ish cotton somewhere... Or turquoise.

Posted by: Kristen on March 5, 2008 03:07 PM

I'm pretty certain I can get at least one made.. by the end of May... count me in.

Posted by: marianne on March 5, 2008 03:26 PM

Err... there's no gauge given on that pattern. I've worked the first 15 rows while on a long phone call. Mine looks big. It is about 9 inches across. Does that sound right? (Does this washcloth make my ass look fat?)

Peaches & Creme, size 5 needles, about 5 st/inch.

Posted by: Erika on March 5, 2008 03:46 PM

For once in my life I get to use this phrase, Erika: Size doesn't matter. Actually, too small would be more of a problem than too big. And I actually have been knitting mine on size 6s to make them a little smaller and to make the stitches a little tighter, and adding a few more stockinette rows at the top and the bottom to make it more square.

I can't believe someone is already knitting one! This is fantastic! My mood has been a little perkier today, knowing this work is going on out there. Thank you, Erika, and eveyrone else who has responded! We're up to about 13 folks already!

Can do one, maybe more, maybe not. Kim

Posted by: Kim on March 5, 2008 04:22 PM

I can knit one. I'll send an e-mail.

Now, of course, with all the volunteers you'll get for making dish cloths, the soap maker will have to make more soap and it'll be a never ending cycle of "too much soap, too many dishcloths!" :)

Posted by: kathleen on March 5, 2008 04:55 PM

I can do one or two washcloths.

Posted by: Jennifer in Oak Park on March 5, 2008 05:13 PM

I'm up for two. How hard can a 66-row pattern be? she asked, having never knit a dishcloth in her life.

Posted by: daisy in the shenandoah valley on March 5, 2008 06:20 PM

I can definitely do one. I am almost finished with a sock and was thinking...what the heck am I going to knit now? Definitely NOT the second sock. Nope. So a dishcloth it is. I already have some cotton as well. I'll cast on tonight.

I'm a local (Kirkland) so I can get it (hopefully more than one) to you quick as a flash!

Count me in! I'll email you privately too. Hugs to you, TMK and Frankie!
ps...need me some Frankie pix!

LOVE Cathy-Cate's "MTA" poem! And count me in for at least one facecloth.

Oooh, perfect. Now I have a new project for practicing right-handed knitting! Should be free to start in April, just let me know how obsessive you'd like me to be. (Can obsess well.)

That soapmaker thinks she's SO HOT making all those soaps! La di da, more soaps than dishcloths!

WE'LL SHOW HER.

Given the requirements, I think I can manage one (though it really depends on the shrugs of doom that are eating my time) by end of May. All of the shrugs need to be done by beginning of May.

Oh, and another comment, because I'm not so bright.

The link to the picture in the pattern seems to be, umm, broken, so I was wondering if you could post a picture of one of your completed cloths.

Posted by: Seanna Lea on March 6, 2008 12:09 PM

Would one do from India? No promises on colour...

Posted by: Swapna on March 6, 2008 08:44 PM

Sign me up for a few. I need another reason to delay the Dr Who scarf :) I think I have some cotton yarn left from the bomb cozy square that I've been looking to use up...
