This is not a good sign.

Let’s see if my hunch is right.
Walking through the living room…

Walking up the spiral stair case…

Walking into the loft…

…and sure enough. This drawer, which was closed when I left for work, is now…

Which explains:

So, is the drawer full of:
A. Acrylic which I hope bionic moths discover and eat?
B. Balls of half-used yarn that are of absolutely no value to me but that I keep anyway because.....I don’t know why?
C. My all-time favorite sock yarns that I love with a stalker-ish love and which I've carefully stored away in anticipation of years of knitting delight? (Imagine flashing marquis lights, a large red arrow pointing left, also flashing, and the sound "Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!" here.)
But all in all, I shouldn’t be surprised, since this morning the cats were making such a racket that I shut them out of the bedroom...and Benny let himself back in. He turned the (slippery round) doorknob and sashayed back in. I now live with a clothes washer and two cats who are smarter than I am. And I hear that some of the skeins of yarn are taking their GEDs, so they’re not far behind.
Of course, when the cats sense I’m less than pleased with them, they run to the couch and do this...

I can’t win.
The humanity! The cuteness!
Posted by: visionsister on August 18, 2008 09:50 AMAwwwww! It's just yarn. You can always get some more. Right? Right!
Posted by: Swapna on August 18, 2008 10:15 AMOh dear. Can they work duct tape or bungee cords? You could seal that drawer somehow so you can still get in but they can't. I think. Those are some disturbingly intelligent cats.
Posted by: Carrie on August 18, 2008 10:20 AMCan you wedge a piece of folded paper between the drawer and the frame? I too have yarn-liberating cats and must hide the wool, so I feel your pain.
Posted by: Vaire on August 18, 2008 10:39 AMYou know, underneath those tuxedos you'd think they have a bit of Bengal in them. Perhaps you can train them to do more useful things like turn out lights or fetch the mail? Fortunately my kitties are interested in yarn only if it is moving. Only twice did Sophie and Carlie (now passed on) strew yarn across the apartment (once in the living room, once up and down the stairs at 3AM) and both times it was because I left a ball right where it could easily be put into motion by a feline. Priscilla seems to have no interest in yarn, so Sophie's out a partner in crime there. But those faces just melt all the anger away, don't they?
Posted by: Kristen on August 18, 2008 10:42 AMnope. you aren't going to win with those two mischeif makers!
Posted by: marti on August 18, 2008 12:02 PMWow. Can you teach Benny to cook dinner? Brew coffee? Fetch the mail? Knit a sock? Maybe you'd better start him with a scarf.
Posted by: Diane T on August 18, 2008 12:31 PMI have new kitten energy in my house, too. I love it and it drives me crazy at the same time. There's no winning, that's for sure, but that doesn't mean we get to give up trying either! lol My Sailor girl pulls the pin cushion out of the sewing table drawer and then pulls all the pins out. Frustrating but so darned cute, she is!
Posted by: Michele on August 18, 2008 01:01 PMDang, it's tough when they grown thumbs.
Posted by: Laurie on August 18, 2008 01:04 PMThe adorableness is a survival tactic. They know if they can manage to look cute enough, you will be less likely to kill them.
My brother's horse used to break out of his stall, let his horsie girlfriend out of hers, then they'd both go back into his stall and shut the door. No latch/handle/lock is animal proof!
Posted by: (formerly) no-blog-rachel on August 18, 2008 01:29 PMThose rascals must have had great incentive to actually open a drawer!
Posted by: Barb on August 18, 2008 03:14 PMYour kitties have exquisite taste in yarn. Not that we would expect any less from them ;-)
Posted by: kmkat on August 18, 2008 04:08 PMToo smart for their own good, that's what they are. Good luck.

I once had a dog that was smarter than me. As embarassing as I sometimes found that, she was a wonderful companion and I loved her besottedly. some animals actually seem to find getting into things a fun exercise - that's why you can't "cure" them. They really seem to enjoy the challenge!
For your really precious stuff, get a lock box or something like that. Latches don't work - I've known many cats for whom latches were no trouble at all - it has to be a lock :)
Your two are lovely and entertaining, aren't they?
Yep - I have 2 with the same Houdini like abilities! Count your blessings - my boy had a taste for cashmere when he was a kitten - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2392/1803932109_6dc0cba577_b.jpg
Posted by: Barbara on August 19, 2008 07:16 AMI always know when the kitties have been naughty -- that's when they turn on the charm and innocence. Definitely a survival tactic.
As for the wool? Well, they DO have good taste.
Posted by: Carol on August 19, 2008 07:48 AMuh-oh... if they're that proficient with doors and drawers already, I think large sticky tape is going to be one of the best answers. Taping the drawer of magical yarn closed would be the first thing I would do (because tape fixes everything), and I have had friends who put tape sticky-side up (not the really really sticky tape for this, though) on places where they do not want kitty paws to be treading. They don't like the stickiness on their furry feet.(can't blame them)
At least, they have cuteness and excellent taste in yarn. Maybe they could be trained to work as yarn-sniffing cats...
I repeat, "The joys of pet ownership"! Could have been much worse, you must admit. Lucky for me, Evangeline listened when I explained to her that she is a Knitter's Cat and yarn is off-limits. And MOSTLY, Lilliane follows her lead. There is a skinny, teetiny chance possibility of a baby boy joining the mix; I hope HE catches on, if that's the case. (That picture? I bet if you hang your head out the window, you'll hear "AAWWWWW" floating your way on the breeze from all over the country!)
Posted by: dale-harriet in WI on August 19, 2008 08:07 AMYes, I keep thinking I would rather have cute but dumb cats...good luck on kitty proofing! ;)
Posted by: Carry on August 19, 2008 12:39 PMBennie and Joon bring such talent into your home! My best thought: a locking, fire-and-water-proof-locking safe for your yarn (such beautiful, beautiful yarn!!!).
I got my locking, fire-and-water-proof-locking safe at Office Depot. I got it to protect myself from pesky family members. I use it for Important Stuff. Perhaps you could do that too. We all know that Wills and Trusts pale in comparison to beautiful, sweet-to-touch yarn. That's my hint for you....
Good luck, honey.
Posted by: Gail "hey-would-you-shake-up-this-bottle-of-juice-for-me" on August 19, 2008 11:04 PMYour kitties are the cutest. And at least they didn't poop on the yarn.
Posted by: Rabbitch on August 20, 2008 12:59 AMI have no advice. Mine are old enough to know better. And they do leave my yarns alone. Perhaps a sterite-type bin with locking lid?
(((hugs)))
My kitty gets into my yarn too. I'm finally getting around to rewinding the 1200+ yard skein of laceweight that was one of her crimes from last year.
I'm not so sure about the double sided tape. My cat will decide that she wants something enough and just deal with the tape. Though if your cats are anything like mine, I'd tape some altoids to the box. If you put one near my kitty she recoils in horror.
