I pride myself on being somewhat inter-generational, old enough to remember Woodstock but hep enough to understand, albeit nominally, the modern young person’s with-it, high-tech world (even if I don’t have cable, an iPod or an iPhone). However, I recently ran head-first into my Waterloo: FaceBook.
My prodigal pal Anne (hi, Anne!!!) “friended” me on FaceBook so I created a profile and friended her back (because I’d figured out that much, at least), and then other friends found me and friended me, so I friended them back...and then after a few days things settled down and the friending mania stopped.
Then I found myself thinking, “Now what?” I’m on FaceBook, I have a profile, I’ve been friended, I’m totally phat, I have homies, I'm part of a posse, and now—seriously—what? I’m stumped. What do people do on FaceBook? It’s not as if I don’t understand the social-networking concept since I’m all ovuh Ravelry, but this is different. Take away the commonality of knitting, and I’m left lost and kornfused. Perhaps I should do what I always do: Go home and ask my washing machine. It’ll know what to do.*

The t-shirt for my co-workers grandson is going well, if by “going well,” I mean, “I knitted on it for two consecutive days without casting on for something else.” I’m using Dale Baby Ull, which for some reason this time around has an extraordinarily lovely feel to it: cottony, silky, springy. I don’t know what’s making the difference but even other knitters have asked, “Oh, my gosh, what yarn is this?!,” expecting me to say, a rare blend of angora, pashmina, qiviut, vicuña, yak, and the undercoat of a baby snow leopard, and this is the only ball of it in the world, and it’s all mine, neener, neener—and have been astonished by the real answer, which is just some old crappy workhorse of a yarn. All of which is to say, between the great pattern and the great yarn, I’m having a blast, and remembering for the first time in a long time why I like to knit.

It’s been a long time since I posted any Kooky Krafts but this one just cries out be posted. This is more sculpture/art than a kraft but it is definitely kooky, and definitely remarkable, if a little macabre. This artist creates the skeletons that he imagines cartoon characters would have inside them. It’s worth clicking through all the pictures.

Before I wrap up for the day, I want to send a shout out to Vaire. Vaire has been one of the most loyal Dear Readers, reading Mossy Cottage almost from the beginning, and I was so tickled to see a comment from her on my last entry. And lest you think I don’t get attached to my commenters, I still remember, to this day, five+ years later, many commenters who have come and gone, like Barb from Texas and MysteryBookLover (Debra). If any of you guys are still out there, mwah!!
*My sentient washing machine now has a name, “Bill.” I’m reading a marvelous, don’t-want-it-to-end sci-fi book called “Chindi.” In the book, all the space ships are run by a very human-like AI computer, but to prevent confusion when a captain switches from one space ship to another, all the AI computers on all the ships are called “Bill.” So “Bill” it is. Although last night my washing machine informed me it would rather be called “William.” A washing machine with 'tude. Great. Next thing you know, it will have a FaceBook profile and will be friending Mr. Washie.
*snerk* be friending mr. washie. That one got me.
Posted by: anj on August 20, 2008 11:41 AMI know my washer would have more friends than me...
Posted by: Sue H on August 20, 2008 11:45 AMThere are many of us lurkers out here, commenting rarely but reading faithfully.
Posted by: kate on vancouver island on August 20, 2008 11:58 AMDon't worry, my dear, I think I'm about 10 years younger than you and I don't get Facebook either. I was on it for about a month and gave up. Though check out the Catbook application. Your cats can be friends with all your friends' cats. It amused me for about three days.
I really think you ought to set up a profile for Bill, uh, excuse me, William. ;)
Posted by: Kristen on August 20, 2008 12:39 PMAnother lurker/rare commenter here. My only experience with Facebook is when my 17yo daughter reads the new pieces of flair to me every night before bed. If Bill/William decides he needs friends, I have a fridge named Dorothy who would probably be interested. She's not all teched up, but she survived a tornado (yeah, that's why the name), so she's got plenty of stories to tel
Posted by: LisaA on August 20, 2008 12:46 PMMy washer would be friends with your washer, although mine is the shy retiring type. Though if Bill gets an invite from my dishwasher, tell him to ignore it. That bitch lies.
Posted by: Carrie on August 20, 2008 12:54 PMI don't understand facebook either - but I have friends and post comments and send notes. BUt then I can't find them again... so I don't get it! :)
Posted by: Kathleen on August 20, 2008 12:58 PMFacebook was fun for a few months when it was how I played Scrabble with lots of people, but I haven't looked at it much since Scrabulous was shut down. I prefer Flickr for pictures, but some people post them on Facebook...
Posted by: naomi on August 20, 2008 01:29 PMI understand completely about Bill.
I have a Palm Centro PDA smartphone named "Buddy". He (via calendar and alarm functions) tells me what to do all the time, even when to get up in the morning (shut up, Buddy!).
But he also entertains and soothes me with his MP3 player, his mindless games, You Tube, and ebook reader. He even lets me read Mossy Cottage on his itty bitty screen. He can't knit, but he holds many of my patterns and my UFO list, and even acts as a row counter on occasion.
It IS scary having a machine that runs my life and is way smarter than anyone I know. But I couldn't do it without him.
P.S. Don't tell my husband ;o)
Posted by: Janknitz on August 20, 2008 01:30 PMYour wicked sense of humor. Still going strong despite attacks from the worms within!!! Love ya--all the way over here in NC. You were one of my first blogs--and I'm still faithful. I taught myself circular knitting and cables while knitting for the Dulaan project. Mwah to you, too!
Posted by: Laura Sue on August 20, 2008 01:40 PMI'm right there with you on Facebook. My husband friended me and now his friends and family have friended me and I friended some of my friends and now I can be bothered to update it or check anyone else's pages.
At least it isn't as ugly as MySpace.
Posted by: jennu on August 20, 2008 02:11 PMRyan dear, you were the one who inspired me to blog in the first place, I'm tickled pink that you remember me. :)
You've been friended on Ravelry and FaceBook. :) The novelty of FaceBook is sort of wearing off for me, but I keep in touch with my SCA friends that way and with knitting friends on Ravelry. Compartmentalising. :)
Posted by: Vaire on August 20, 2008 03:03 PMI LOVE BILL! I believe that in one of McDevitt's other books, one of the Bills prefers to be called William, so that's alright.
As far as I can tell - and please, Facebook users, do not take this personally - Facebook is one of those things that looks like work, but really isn't. In other words, it feels fruitful and interesting, but is actually just a waste of time and energy.
Personally, I've been trying to cull these little "things that look like work but aren't" out of my day. I call them "busy-ness." For example, I recently cut my Bloglines subscriptions down to less than 20 subscriptions. You, obviously, have made the cut. :-)
Posted by: Erika on August 20, 2008 03:15 PMOh yeah, Facebook is not work -- unless you are editing a book designed to explain to us non-Millenials what Facebook is *for* and how to do stuff with it. (Yes, I am editing such a book.)
Posted by: Becca on August 20, 2008 04:03 PMOK - re: naming stuff. I name everything. My laptop is Daisy. (The desktop is Baptiste). My flashdrive is named Ygraine. (She's the "e-drive" and yes, I know "Ygraine" doesn't start with an E. Nevermind.) Also, if you ever find a purveyor of "a rare blend of angora, pashmina, qiviut, vicuña, yak, and the undercoat of a baby snow leopard" - let me know, although I'd prefer some percent of unicorn in there too.... Might I add - my knitting ability is about Red Heart, but that's OK, I still relish using fancier stuff. Oh - and MMMWWWAAAHH! to you too!
Posted by: dale-harriet in WI on August 20, 2008 05:07 PMWith this entry I think your back sweetheart!
Posted by: tayloe on August 20, 2008 05:13 PMI don't get Facebok eithet. I was in there every day for a month, and I kept reading that my friends were 'out having drinks' or 'walking to wherever' or 'meeting new people' and I was at home knitting and watching Improving Programs on TV. I never log in any more - it's just too depressing.
Posted by: M-H on August 20, 2008 06:17 PMHey - my washer just got its mouth washed out.... it is one of those washers with smelly front load syndrome!
Posted by: irina on August 20, 2008 07:34 PMOk, 2 things.
1. I lost my job in february and spent 2 weeks in bed. I refused to eat and refused to answer the phone. That was not fun. I ended up watching jerry springer and court shows solid for all 2 weeks. And then another one of those commercials for massage school came on, so I got out of bed and went and enrolled :)
2. I spent the last 2 hours in kinesiology class catching up on your archives (on my snazzy sidekick phone....aka Imelda, while listening to my little green ipod, aka Kermit) and now I feel like an ass that I couldn't be there to help you.
I am *very* glad that you have good friends to rescue you from yourself sometimes. That's super important :)
And give Benny and Joon a scritch for me...and go rent the movie, but ONLY (seriously, trust me, it's SAD) when you feel better and have a friend there with you :)
And if you ever want a massage or a body treatment ( scrubs and other spa stuff) you let me know and I'll drag my massage table (or my massage chair, if you prefer to stay clothed) over :)
Wow. Do I get an award for longest comment ever?
Posted by: libby on August 21, 2008 09:41 AMOh. HAhahaha....Snork!
Friending Mr. Washie.
ROFLOL.....
Ok. Now that this most recent little giggle fit has passed, if you find out the bruhaha about Facebook, let me know, okay? I never saw the point, and didn't even create a profile. I've got more than I know what to do with Ravelry and Plurk...(which frankly, I'm not sure I *get* either)
((hugs))
Oooo, facebook -- so much fun. although apparently lots of the other commenters don't think so... I just love doing the status thing because it's a quick way to find out what everyone is up to. And you can send little messages or little cyber gifts. Fun, fun, fun.
Although, now that I'm thinking about it, I guess that's pretty much what a blog is about, and perhaps that's why a blog-less lurker-type person like me can get more into facebook than people that actually have a blog. Mhmm.
Posted by: Romy on August 21, 2008 11:00 AMMy status on Facebook is always so much tamer than everyone else's that I sort of don't do much with it either. Although now friends on Facebook know I got stomped on by a horse...
It is kind of cool that people from my past can find me there. It's also kind of scary, though. Notably, the computer geek in the family is NOT on Facebook and loathes it. Huh.
Posted by: Lee Ann on August 21, 2008 12:15 PMDid you know that you can "send yarn" on Facebook?
Posted by: Becca on August 21, 2008 12:23 PM*all* of my appliances have names so that i can address them in that certain tone of voice (as used by mothers when they address you by your complete name before handing out punishment- i still shudder at the very thought of my mom speaking my full name- i knew i'd had it then!!)- some pay more attention than others, and a few are just rebels who delight in overflowing, burning out motors, or coming to a sudden halt during important moments-
why yes, i'm still here- i've had an unplanned reading hiatus but am slowly returning to the world of the living- m'wah back at you!!
be happy-
Posted by: barb in texas on August 21, 2008 03:48 PMHi! It is indeed lovely to be back in touch. Missed ya.
Here's what I do with Facebook:
I update occasionally, and I answer comments on my Wall occasionally, and I use it when I need to contact people -- what Ilove about it is when I stop by the page, I can see at a glance what a LOT of people are doing -- it's easy ti keep track of them.
That's it.
There's a segment of people on Facebook now who are, like me, let's say, sorta Old. So we're not spending every damn minute there. But it is useful in its way.
love! AnnePandora
Posted by: Pandora on August 22, 2008 05:10 AMI just set up a Facebook page (friended you - hi!) and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I set mine up to keep in touch with my niece and nephew, kinda like why I have a (sadly neglected) My Space page. I kinda thought if I put my maiden name over there I could find out what some of my equally elderly high school mates are doing. So far no action there, although some teenaged Philippino boy tried to friend me. I sent him back a note teling him I appreciated the interest, but what he thought he had in common with a middle aged lesbian knitter was beyond me. To his credit, he said OOPS!
Posted by: ellen on August 22, 2008 06:06 AMI remember Woodstock. (I wasn't quite old enough to go. But not by much!) I do have an Ipod. Still having a little problem getting my audio books on it.
But I had never hear of FaceBook until I read your post. Thanks for bringing up to date.
My kids like to leave me in the dark of a lot of things, but my teenage Granddaughter helps me out with things like AIM.
Glad to hear you sounding so much better. It's nice to "hear" you sounding like your old self.
