Monday Miscellanea

The cat-powered plant carnage continues:

smashedplant.jpg

Even worse, this terra cotta planter used to be up here (the sad leaves on the right are part of the plant that ripped off as it fell):

The mess that the whole shebang made on its way down, hitting everything along the way—the wall, my entertainment center, the spiral staircase, my CD holder—and the nova-sized explosion it made as it hit the quarry-tile floor were truly spectacular. Suffice it to say I've never had to vacuum a wall before.

What's saddest of all, this plant (which I realized I shouldn't have had up there in the first place, considering what I'm about to write) had survived a 6.8 earthquake, without moving even a jot, in that very same spot. Sigh.

Here, proof that the blanket is well-traveled—a picture of it in my office:

Progress on the Good-Enough Gansey has halted while I'm consigned to a by-request project that lands half-way between Knitting Heaven and Knitting Hell. Heaven, because it's a project for Lovie, the baby of the deceased basketball player; Hell, because it's knit out of Red Heart Baby Clouds. Now, I don't object to acrylic just out of principal (some of my most favorite and fun projects were done in acrylic), but this stuff makes my hands ache, splits a lot, is just fluffy and frizzy enough to make it nigh impossible to pick up dropped stitches, and has a "squeaky" feel to it that sets my teeth on edge. The good news is its just a wee hat knit using 48 stitches; should be done soon, please God.

Knit a baby hat out of merino or something, just to cleanse the palate.
I have some of that baby clouds in my stash, in the "this is the stuff I'd as soon forget" drawer. Shudder.
Good thing you weren't standing under that plant.

Kitties require very careful consideration of plant placement. Which is why my pothos (given to me 13+ years ago by a grateful client) is shut away in the kitty-free bedroom.

They were just telling you that it is well past time you repotted your philodendron and took cuttings for a new one while you were at it. ;)

I've had to do some plant rearranging since acquiring cats. Sophie doesn't care much about them, but Priscilla chewed a spider plant down to the nubbins while I slept one night. (No, spider plants are not poisonous for kitties. It'll make them barf, like grass will, which is why some vets think they eat it--to help with hairballs.) Anyway, all the plants are now out of cat reach and out of their patented ZOOM Routes.

Wow. That IS a mess!

I second the "knit a baby hat" suggestion, FWIW....

I think if you took that big chunk from what stayed on the stairwell and put it in water you would have a pretty healthy plant to repot in about 4 weeks.

sorry they brok the pot tho. I know what a pain it is to clean that mess up.

sending hugs!

I assume no kitties were injured. They may show some signs of PTSD for a while, though.

I gave up on plants long ago when our lifestyle became too paripatetic. Recently I also deleted fresh flowers due to kittie food allergies and a lack of discresion as to what counts as food.

May you live in interesting times.

Like KarenJo, I have one cat who has decided that any plant material must be food. Which would be ok if she wasn't such a 'sensitive' kitty, and not only promptly pukes up anything other than her kibble (and sometimes that) but also develops sore spots on her neck that are very gross. An allergy to something, says the vet. After the $400 biopsy. So no flowers or plants in the house. If someone does bring me flowers they grace the downstairs bathroom, and help us all if the door gets left open!

So I am just envious of the fact that there was a plant there for the cats to destroy :-)

Pfft, pothos's are sturdy. An event like that is hardly enough to make a pothos blink.

In fact, I can almost guarantee that after it's been re-potted, it will have a sudden growth surge and grow back even faster. Truth!

Isn't there a kind of strange beauty in watching such a spectacular bit of destruction? Two Christmases ago, in an attempt to get something underneath it, I dislodged a box of six wine glasses -- one of those open boxes you can get at Ikea. Six glasses when SMASHING on the ground. (One of them actually survived.) It was beautiful to watch, before I realized that I'd have to step carefully in order to even get to the broom.

Kitties are fun; I'm glad you're enjoying yours.

Kristin: I have three spider plants that my cat noms on while pretending to be a cow in the field, apparently........and yes, I bet if you do make little cuttings, that plant will rise like Lazarus! That gansey, by the way? STUNNING! I admire your creativity.

Wow. We don't have anything quite that high up, but I had to stop getting flowers when we got our kitty. Not because the kitty would eat them all (she sniffs and nibbles and pushes stuff around, but doesn't eat everything she sees), but because my favorite flowers were all poisonous to kitties and I didn't want to take any chances!

Egad. What a mess! How did you know where to start with the clean up? Hope the kitty doesn't also eat yarn.

Posted by: Barb on October 28, 2008 09:47 AM

Oh honey, the acrylic is a challenge for me too. Remember, sock yarn is superwash, usually the right weight, and often PRETTY!

As for the kitty tornadoes? I have been there! I'm experiencing the same thing right now with two greyhound pups (they just turned 2 but trust me...they are PUPPIES!). 1 phone, 2 pairs of flip flops, 2 baskets, and a gajillion loads of laundry later. It is a good thing they are so dang cute.

Be careful, I believe Pothos (if that is what the plant is) is poisenous to kitties. If they chew on it, I would get rid of it.

Your feline chilluns sound like they have a plan to slowly destroy your house. I can imagine them plotting their evil deeds while you are asleep. (I love cats, by the way, but I remember having to remove the knobs on the kitchen stove because I once found a burner turned on when, SURPRISE, I hadn't been home and never used that back burner anyway. The only "person" at home during the day was 'THE CAT'.)
