Budget- and job-wise, things have gotten ugly here in Washington state—especially when one is employed by an organization which reports directly to the State legislature—so by way of a pre-emptive strike, I went to the State unemployment-benefits Web site to see what I could see. Something about their home page just did not leave me feeling reassured:
I did discover after the fact that this jumble had something had to do with how I had gotten to the page, not the page itself, but the damage was done.
Posted by Ryan at April 27, 2009 09:19 AMI had the guy at our office tell me, when I call in, if it doesn't say Welcome right away, hang up and try again (otherwise it's asking for your language selection just to tell you their system is busy). It takes 20 minutes on average to get CONNECTED to their computer, and another 20 after that to talk to a person. I told the guy that if the unemployment office hired more people everyone would have a job. He referred me to the news on the state budget. Sigh.
Posted by: Carrie on April 27, 2009 09:49 AMSeeing as we've been living on one income while both of us are still working full-time, I'd rather not think about the economy for another couple of years.
Posted by: Mel on April 27, 2009 10:30 AMIt looks like that website is shivering with fear, which is why the links are all blurred together. That seems appropriate enough.
Posted by: Erika on April 27, 2009 11:32 AMOhdearohdearohdear. Well, as someone who just graduated with an advanced degree and has tossed a heap o' rejection letters into the recycling bin, I'm going to join Mel. {sigh}

Posted by: Lynn in Tucson on April 27, 2009 01:41 PMPreparation is always best but let's not drown ourselves in fear. I like how Mel thinks. It's just too bad when you only have one income in which to live on and not another one as a luxury.
Kisses and love!
Also never call unemployment if you are in the position to need it, just file online. Much quicker and you don't have to talk to people.
